The Rider's of Mistledale (the local militia and constabulary) are everywhere, making it difficult for an honest boats' man to make a living, especially that blasted ranger Jarrod Rold. He seems to be following Neon everywhere he goes, just waiting for Neon to make a wrong move so he can make an example of him to the rest of the riff-raff in town.
Neon Wilde is the only son of Ellarian Dawnhorn the chief constable of Harrowdale Town. He is the offspring of an ill-advised romance and marriage the sun-elf Ellarian had with the human Racso Wilde. Ill-advised because they first met when Ellarian arrested Racso for smuggling elicit goods through Harrowdale’s port. Racso promptly left for the Pirate Islands shortly after Neon was born.
Neon was a challenging child to raise. Ellarian tried to give him a good education through the ministry at the temple of Oghma, but he preferred spending time at the temple to Tymora instead where he met many adventurers from all over Faerun. When he wasn’t at the temple, he was gambling, chasing girls and getting into other mischief down near the docks. Ellarian finally put him in the constabulary in the hope that that would straighten him out, but he showed greater aptitude for unconventional combat rather than the combat techniques advocated by the constabulary.
Neon is not without redeeming qualities. The legendary gnome illusionist thief, Osier Manchineel, took an interest in the youth when he visited the temple of Tymora to take up a quest on their behalf. He must have recognised the same physical quickness and keen, if misguided, intellect that Osier himself displayed when he was young. He advised young Neon to “Choose your path wisely and you will become the greatest hero the Dalelands has ever seen”. So far, Neon has shown no inclination to choose the wise path.
Tensions between Neon and his mother escalated until he finally left home at the young age (for a half-elf) of nineteen. He spent some time on a pirate vessel working around the coast near Harrowdale. On ship he picked up some skill as a sailor but mostly swabbed the decks...work that he was not well suited for. He jumped ship around Yhaunn and then made his way to the Sembian town of Ordulin where he tried to establish himself as a thief. Unfortunately, local law enforcement officials and the thieves’ guild have forced him to move on.
Finally, he found honest work on the keelboats hauling goods up and down the Ashaba River. This was grunt work too but he slowly built up a less honest sideline of smuggling and petty theft. Neon has had occasion to visit Ashabenford and the Velvet Veil many times during this period.
Neon has chosen to adopt his father’s surname of Wilde rather than use his mother’s name of Dawnhorn. He also uses his Chondathan name of Neon rather than the Elven Ninniach (Rainbow) that his mother prefers. Some of his elven friends call him by his nickname “Carad” (Red) but he does not like it since it gets twisted into “Carrot” in Chondathan.
Physically Neon is average height and weight for a half-elf. His most striking physical feature is his red hair, inherited from his human father. Lately tales of the pirate “Redbeard” have reached the Dalelands. Neon believes Redbeard may be his father, but there is no proof of this.
