First Strike
(weapon, uncommon)

Last Updated: February 25, 2024
Campaign: The Lost Mine - Ian

Elvish script is etched on both sides of the blade of this well-crafted rapier. Its guard has an intricate vine and leaf pattern, while the base of its pommel is embossed with a heraldic crest.

"First Strike" is a magic rapier of elven craftmanship that only weighs 1 lb, giving it the "light" weapon property (thus it can be used with two-weapon fighting).

The bearer of "First Strike" hears ghostly indistinct whispers from an elvish warrior warning them of danger. This grants a +2 bonus to initiative if the bearer isn't incapacitated.

History:

  • The elvish script etched on both sides of this gilded blade translates as "First Strike".
  • The heraldic crest on the pommel represents the Galanodel (Moonwhisper) family, a minor moon elf noble house.
  • "First Strike" was last wielded by Galinndan Galanodel, a young elvish knight slain during the goblin wars.
  • "First Strike" was recovered by Forest, a high elf rogue, from Klarg, the bugbear boss of the goblins in Cragmaw Hideout.

    Design Notes:

Its base value is: 175 gp (uncommon)
= 25 gp - physical value of the rapier.
    = 50 gp - guardian (common item/minor property).
= 100 gp - light weapon (uncommon item)

Inspired by the tables in the DMG on page 142-143 to make this magic item unique. Basically, they provide ideas for the creator, history, minor property and quirk.
    - creator: elf
    - history: n/a
    - minor property: guardian
    - quirk: n/a
