Cormyrean Greatshield
(armor, rare, requires attunement, cursed)

Last Updated: October 28, 2022
Campaign: The Lost Mine

This large steel shield bears the insignia of a purple dragon standing upon a broken arrow.

The "cursed" version of the "Cormyrean Greatshield" is identical in appearance and has the same magical aura as the regular version of the "Cormyrean Greatshield" so even an "identify" spell will not detect the cursed version and will instead identify it as the regular version.

Attuning to the "Cursed Cormyrean Greatshield" curses you until you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic.
Removing the shield fails to end the curse on you.
Whenever a ranged weapon attack is made against a target within 10 feet of you, the curse causes you to become the target instead.

While holding the "Cursed Cormyrean Greatshield", you have resistance to damage from ranged weapon attacks.

History:

  • The "Cormyrean Greatshield" is created by the War Wizards of Cormyr.
  • The "Cormyrean Greatshield" is popular amongst those who hunt evil humanoids in the Storm Horns.
  • The "Cursed Cormyrean Greatshield" was created by an apprentice War Wizard who thought he could improve upon the original design and experimented in secret.
  • To increase the range that the shield could protect others from ranged weapon attacks, he made the shield more attractive to missiles, and if they should hit, reduce the damage done.
  • Unfortunately, the magic used to attract missiles was flawed and stayed with the shield bearer even after they had discarded the shield.
  • Many soldiers died before the curse was discovered and traced back to the unauthorized magical processes of the apprentice and his work halted.
  • However, many of the "Cursed Cormyrean Greatshield" remain in circulation, since they cannot be identified as such.

    Design Notes:

    Its cost is 500 gp.
    - 500 gp for the shield of missile attraction (rare item).

Inspired by the tables in the DMG on page 142-143 to make this magic item unique. Basically, they provide ideas for the creator, history, minor property and quirk.
    - creator: Human (kingdom of Cormyr)
