  • Price: 3,000 gp
  • Body Slot: ring
  • Caster Level: 1st
  • Aura: Faint; (DC 16) divination
  • Activation: use activated - command (standard action or 1 hour: see text)
  • Weight: -

This pearl ring is etched with owl feather patterns.

The Ring of Identify allows the bearer to cast the Identify spell once per day. This requires touching and examining the item for an hour.
    Base cost:
    = ((spell level x caster level x 2000 gp) + (material cost x 100))/5 (once per day)
    = ((1 x 1 x 2,000 gp) + (100 gp x 100))/5 = (2,000 gp + 10,000 gp)/5 = 12,000 gp/5
    = 2,400 gp

The Ring of Identify determines all magic properties of a single magic item, including how to activate those functions (if appropriate), and how many charges are left (if any). The Ring of Identify does not function when used on an artifact. The Ring of Identify only has a 1% chance to reveal a cursed item’s true properties, including the cursed aspect. If an object bearing Nystul’s Magic Aura is examined using the Ring of Identify, the examiner can recognize that the aura is false and detects the object’s actual qualities if he succeeds on a Will save against the spell. Otherwise, he believes the aura and no amount of testing reveals what the true magic is.

The Ring of Identify can also be used to cast Detect Magic twice per day as a standard action.
    cost:
    = ((spell level x caster level x 2,000 gp) x 1.5 additional ability)/2.5 (2 times per day)
    = (0.5 x 1 x 2,000 gp x 1.5)/2.5 = +600 gp

You detect magical auras within a 60 ft cone-shaped emanation while concentrating for up to 10 rounds. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area or subject.
o 1st Round: Presence or absence of magical auras.
o 2nd Round: Number of different magical auras and the power of the most potent aura.
o 3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura.

If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect.) Magical areas, multiple types of magic, or strong local magical emanations may distort or conceal weaker auras. See PHB p219 for additional information on aura strength and lingering auras.
